"Fishing Cape San Blas, St George Island, Apalachicola & Mexico Bech" Tarpon have began showing up along the beaches of Cape San Blas. The big push of fish should begin stacking up in West Pass within the next week. All signs point to an excellent year for the Silver King. Now if we can just get the winds to shut down for a while. Maybe a live sacrifice is in order. I can think of a few excellent candidates. LOL. The bay fishing has been the best it has been in years. All the species (Trout, Reds, Pompano, Spanish and Blues) are well represented. The Triple Tail bite is wide open. Some old timers say it is the best they have seen in 30 years. All in all, it is stacking up to be a great year. Hope you get tp join us. Please feel free to give me a call or shoot us an email if you have any questions. I hope we get to see you at the dock soon. 850-509-0573 Captain Keith Grimes
11/01/07 - NW Florida 2007 Tarpon Season Report
The 2007 Tarpon season was at times pure bedlam. The season started as usual around July 1. The bait was plentiful and the Tarpon were all jacked up. I've had clients refer to this fishery as "Tarpon Mania". That is indeed the most appropriate description I have heard to describe thousands of Tarpon feeding with reckless abandonment on pogey schools that stretch for miles down the beach side of the islands. Tarpon rolling, Tarpon slashing and Tarpon free jumping six feet into the air. WOW! The free for all continued through July and most of August.
As Labor Day approached, the pogeys began to thin out. As the bait goes so goes the Tarpon. Thinning out as used here to describe the numbers of Tarpon is somewhat misleading. A typical July-August day went from seeing too many jacked up fish to realistically count, down to seeing more laid back rolling fish in smaller schools. The September & October Tarpon were more laid back rather than the frantic slashers and jumpers.
By the third week of October the Tarpon were gone. The realization that these magnificent creatures won't be there tomorrow morning leaves you feeling empty inside. The memories of the time you shared with these monsters however leaves you feeling like the luckiest person on earth. The season was filled with big smiles, hugs, handshakes, laughter and the always present broken hearts. That's simply what it is like to live with the Tarpon if even for a short time.
We'll save you a spot for the 2008 season of "Tarpon Mania".
